Our whole school reading approach is to encourage a love of reading for pleasure and to increase fluency and confidence. We have a number of approaches in place for this year.
Some of our strategies are included below:
Encourage a love of reading, fluency and confidence.
Staff reading aloud in PM reg 2x per week.
Positive role models
Switched to whole texts (Research 12 weeks reading 8 months progress but 16 months for weakest readers)
Encourage all staff to read any texts aloud in lessons (cold read).
Re-introduce silent reading. Increase the amount of quality texts available in the classroom.
Have copies in the classroom of the ‘reading aloud’ book for those who wish to read it.
New book cases for classrooms that need one.
High quality reading material in KS3 classrooms to be purchased.
Promotion of Millionaire’s Club: reading 10 classics
Book vending machine. Visual/inspiring, rewards for reading.
Website information about the books we are reading in PM registration: parents may wish to purchase.
New TV screens at key points around the school to promote reading e.g. famous quotes/book suggestions.
Head teacher half-termly live stream reading in form time.
Additional book cases to be purchased to promote reading in Reception and Year 5.
Magpie Books. Children collect interesting vocabulary as they hear anyone read to them or from texts they read themselves.
Independent reading homework revamped in KS3 using magpie books.
Year 5 Stair Case quotes – promote a love of reading.
Daily Reading for weakest readers from scheme.
Units of Sound. AM registration for selected pupils in Y5 and 6.
Increased phonics training for LSAs.
Echo Reading Year 6
Intervention sharing in Wednesday briefings. Who and what.
Monday briefings – raising profile of most vulnerable pupils. Sharing strategies that work.
Year 5 temporary literacy group. 2 x Echo Read lessons, 2 x phonics, 1 x grammar, 1 x writing.
Year 6 ‘Read Out’ competition to be launched.
Parental Workshop. Reading support strategies for selected parents.
Scholastic Book Club launch. Parents can purchase discounted high quality books online whilst creating rewards for school.
Tier 2 words training for staff.
The school uses Units of Sound for intervention with key pupils. Units of Sound is a highly structured online literacy programme which supports the development of reading and spelling through multi-sensory activities. Pupils are placed on the reading and spelling program separately according to need; this means they are working at exactly the right level with built in checking mechanisms to monitor progress.
Unfortunately not the ones with chocolate chips.
